SympH2ony will invest 20 million euros in the Port of Barcelona to promote a European green hydrogen ecosystem

The Board of Directors of the Port of Barcelona has awarded SympH2ony, the joint venture created by Toyota Tsusho Europe and Messer, the construction and operation of the port’s future hydrogen refuelling station. The project, which represents an investment of more than 20 million euros, goes beyond the installation of an energy infrastructure and forms part of the alliance’s strategy to promote a full European ecosystem for green hydrogen-based mobility, particularly in logistics and industrial environments.

The new hydrogen station will serve trucks, buses, and port and logistics machinery from both the Port of Barcelona and surrounding areas, and will act as a catalyst for the gradual transformation of fleets and equipment towards zero-emission mobility, one of the key challenges in the decarbonisation of transport and port activities.

The station, which will be built on a 7,000 m² plot on Cal Bitxot Street in the ZAL Prat, will be strategically located to serve the entire Port, ZAL Prat, ZAL Barcelona, the Free Trade Zone, and the logistics and industrial areas of El Prat de Llobregat.

The project presented by SympH2ony includes, in addition to the main production and supply unit, mobile units to refuel equipment that cannot reach the hydrogen station, as well as the possibility of connecting future pipelines to large consumers. The plant will have an electrolysis capacity of 3.1 MW by 2030, expandable to 6.2 MW by 2032, when it will be able to produce up to 540 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.

This facility will be a pioneer in the national port sector, not only because it will supply hydrogen to land vehicles and port machinery, but also because it will produce it on-site using electrolysers powered by 100% renewable energy, ensuring that the fuel is emission-free and qualifies as green hydrogen.

SympH2ony is a joint venture created in 2024 by Toyota Tsusho Europe and Messer with the aim of accelerating the deployment of hydrogen mobility in Europe, particularly in hard-to-decarbonise sectors.

Messer is one of the world’s leading companies in industrial, medical, and specialty gases, with more than a century of experience in hydrogen production and management. Toyota Tsusho Europe, a subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho Corporation, develops projects in Europe linked to sustainable mobility value chains, including hydrogen-based transport solutions. At the Port of Barcelona, SympH2ony will act not only as a hydrogen supplier, but also as a technological and operational partner in the transition towards zero-emission fleets and equipment.

The new hydrogen station is part of the Port of Barcelona’s Energy Transition Plan and strengthens its environmental sustainability strategy, helping to position the port as a regional hub for green hydrogen production and distribution, and promoting the adoption of clean fuels as viable and competitive alternatives to fossil fuels.

The concession is granted for a renewable period of 40 years and includes the urbanisation of surrounding roads and the construction of a roundabout to facilitate vehicle access and exit.
